‘Faith, Hope, Love and Forgiveness’

Critics fear Mel Gibson's upcoming film, The Passion of the Christ, could be a too-bloody retelling of Jesus' final hours, and potentially could stoke the fires of anti-Semitism.

But Gibson tells Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview — airing Monday at 10 p.m. ET on ABCNEWS' Primetime — that those who accuse him, or the film he directed, of sparking anti-Semitism avoid the central point he hoped to make.

"I don't want people to make it about the blame game," Gibson says. "It's about faith, hope, love and forgiveness. That's what this film is about. It's about Christ's sacrifice."

I swear, I just love this man.

Posted by: mrs. muddy at February 16, 2004 12:09 AM

You are talking about Muddy, Right?

Posted by: cwilli at February 16, 2004 01:37 AM

LOL...No actually, I was talking about Mel Gibson. But it's not *that* kind of love of which I was referring to.

As far as Muddy goes - well....he's okay. Tehehe.

I still don't get it. Christians worship a Jew as God! (Jesus I mean.) Why do people think it is anti-Semitic to say Jewish priests conspired to have him executed? An act which Christians aren't even upset about!

I'll sure have a look at that film.

completely unrelated ... anybody seen my last posts ? The front page says I've not posted since 15 january... ANd I like to be able to trace if people reacted to my posts ... last one was in reply to a not very sensitive comment from cwilli on a very old message back in march last year ...

N e way.
Have a pleasant day.

DF:

"The front page says I've not posted since 15 january.."

I've asked muddy about others who have had that done to them before and he said it was because they used a diff. e-mail address. Is that what you did? If so, that's the problem...if not...I have no clue.

skywalker:

"Why do people think it is anti-Semitic to say Jewish priests conspired to have him executed?"

I do not know. Maybe though, (I've personally wonderd this) since Jesus has been noted in history as being one of the greatest men to ever live, (of course, we as Christians know He is THEE greatest man who ever lived AND lives) maybe, they don't want to be known for killing one of their own?

Plus, because of how much prejudice jews have faced in history (especially with the holocaust), then maybe they feel this will give people more of a reason to hate them. Even though we don't hate them at all. I don't know, it's the best I've got. Like I've stated before though, I don't understand why they don't seem realize that the jewish role in history is of no secret to us. These people act as if a HUGE skeleton has just been let out of the closet. LOL

Oh, well, I'm going to watch Primetime tonight and see if I can understand why some people fear that this film will bring about some kind of "anti-semitic" behavior.

DF. I will save you the trouble. Nobody responds to your posts.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Amazing interview tonight! If I could, I think I would hug that man and give him a kiss on the check (And, no Cwilli, I'm not talking about Muddy:-D ) And I obviously haven't even seen the movie yet. Anyone else see Primetime tonight?

Thanks Mrs muddy for replying ... :-)

F Y I catholics have a long history of jewish repression.
Jews were accused of causing the plague back in the 14th century... There's a long history of catholic hostility toward jews ... There's a debate for instance about the validity of that sentence in only one of the evangelist account, he has the jews say they agree to be damned and all of their children too ...

so there's a background (you could add the silence of the pope during wwII) ...

But that still does not explain nor justify the reaction of the jews mentionned in the post.

"Jews were accused of causing the plague back in the 14th century."

I did not know that....and I actually just got done reading a very small sample of that fact...interresting.

"the jews say they agree to be damned and all of their children too ..."

That's actually in Matthew 27:25....but just because the Jews said that in the Bible does not mean that God agreed with them nor does it mean He put that "curse" into action. Something else that would be interresting to study someday - well, for me anyway.

this 'controversy' just seems like free advertising and publicity for the movie which is being sold to us.

Posted by: bennyhill1978 at February 19, 2004 02:52 PM

If they really wanted a controvesy they would have dressed the Romans as ATF agents, given nukes, F16's and Apaches to the Jews and given Jesus some Koresh-style sunglasses. Now THATS a movie!

Posted by: bennyhill1978 at February 19, 2004 02:57 PM

Pardon me but...huh?

Posted by: skywalker at February 20, 2004 11:53 PM

ATF ?
I'll go see that movie. And I clearly await movies about Mohamet, Buddha,
Rama, krishna ... And all the indian gods... Though I'm lot less interested in them, the stories are fun.
Confucius ...

By the way... If that movie about mohamet is made, I think you can expect greater jewish outroar, because mohamet was an earthly ruler, at war with the jewish because they refused to regognise him as the Messaiah... So that movie would probably sound antisemitic.

The film I would love is a film on the making of the bible, or on the making of the catholic institutions ...

french site on apocryph version of the new testament ...

very interesting.

that statement about jewish uproar with a movie about muhammad is well, BS. The hatred between jews and muslims has nothing to do with their non-recognition of him as the messiah. He didn't claim to be the messiah!

I read posts here frequently, but have only posted once. I showed up as an anonymous roadrunner user, but I wanted to share this with you. Cwilli and I have seen the movie. Yes it is very graphic, but it is not gratuitous violence. The violence is necessary to drive home the whole point of the movie. For the record,in the the Bible, and in the movie, Christ forgave the Jews for what they did WHILE he was hanging on the cross. The main messages I got from this film is the extent of the suffering that Christ did in our names and that we as believers in Him should also forgive our enemies. I have never left such a completely silent movie theater in my life as I did on Weds. night.

Mrs. cwilli:

I will echo my muddy in saying: Good to hear from you. Sounds like an Excellent movie. Can't wait to see it myself. Thanks for the input :-)
