So they want to remove anything that even resembles religion in our society. They claim that it is a separation of Church and State. Well I disagree. I have that right. It does not change the fact that they are doing it. However I draw the line when suddenly it is only certain religions that they try to remove. That is exactly what is going on here.
If you read this news story you will find that they are arguing over Muslims who want to have a certain phrase on their graduation outfits. It seems that the Muslims have decided that they want to wear the phrase “shahada”. This of course could have one of many meaning. Some of the meanings could be "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger" and "God, increase my knowledge." What they are arguing about is that some say that the word shahada was Hamas' call for Muslims to martyr themselves.
But that’s not the point.
Now if you have not already got the point, then let me help you out. It would not matter what a Christian phrase would have been. They would have immediately denied them the right to wear it. Let alone if it were something to the effect that Jesus is the ONLY lord. Am I the only one who finds that this is totally outrageous? Am I the only one who is not surprised that this would be the University of California?
Now, Do you want to see something very scary. If you are familiar with Communism you may recognize a book called "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen. In that book he outlines the goals that would lead the fall of capitalism. If you read the goals, you will find that most of them have come true since Communism was declared ‘no longer a threat’. Number 27 and 28 are related to religion. I think that there is a new threat to this Country. Its every bit as quiet and sneaky as Communism was in the 1960's
It's called Socialism.

Look I believe in the seperation of chruch and state. I don't think the government she included a religion. I don't think your religious views should necesarilly not influence your politics. But you're right, there IS a point where it is being nit picky, stupid and wrong. Basically the problem is that they can remove Christianity and not be a racist, if they remove Islam, that's rcial because it affect blacks and Arabs.
It would all be less of an issue if we didn't have public schools, but that's a different discussionf or a different day. But then again, the ACLU has sued some private schools before for there religious symbols that they "force" on students.
I can understand not having public school teachers lead prayers withs tudents. I'm all in favor of that: I might not necesarilly want my children praying to the same god as the teacher. I'm against the government establishing a religion. But what in the world is it really hurting anyone to to have under God (though the original 9th circuit decision was technically "right" but again, different discussionf or a different day, the supreme court was even more "right") in the pledge or "In God We Trust" on our money? If it is putting you to tears to have to say under God or see "In God We Trust" on money then you have more issues than I can ever hope to solve.
We've become a nation of whiners, coddlers and babies. We've become nit picky. Americans need to return to the fundemental values that made this country great such as hard work, independence and integrity and get over this petty stuff. If we don't, I fear greatly for the future of this country. Thank God that I believe in America and Americans. I still believe we have a love of freedom in all of us, deep down.
Posted by: skywalker at June 19, 2004 01:50 AMIt seems you start to get the feeling that there is some need to bar ostantative religious display by muslims then ...
I agree 100 % with sky on this.
ANd I add... Beware because with the huge depression deflation by debt coming in ... Socialism is indeed a sure bet.
But it won't be because socialists or communists did any good job ... It's just the direct result of years of "spend now pay later"
Which is exactly what the right has been advocating for 20 years.
No need for higher wages : Workers will borrow
No need for taxes : state will borrow
Little need for profit : Company can borrow
Look at the debt figures related to GDP...
But then ... I guess this is part of life. Shiva concept. You can not build if you do not destroy first.
Posted by: DF at June 22, 2004 05:06 PMActually DF, in this country, the left is who has been pushing for borrowing. The left in this country was encouraging people to borrow for houses when we had mortgage rates of 20%!
I agree, our household debt figures are out of hand, but I don't think socialism will help it...I think it will make it worse in the long run.
Posted by: skywalker at June 22, 2004 07:16 PMSo let me get this straight, Because of our impending doom of an economy, we will all magically turn into socialists at the stroke of midnight on some date in the future?
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Thats one of your best DF. Thanks I needed that! Keep drinking that wine!
BTW Here is why our economy will always survive; You Europeans are too lazy.

"The reason Europe is less productive than the US isn't because Europeans lack a knowledge-based society -- it's because they take so many vacations"
THATS NOT EVEN A US NEWS SOURCE!!!
Speaking of wine, hey df, i'm hoping to spend a couple weeks in Europe next summer (mostly Britain and Italy, but I want to visit Normandy for obvious reasons.) I've never been much of a wine drinker...actually, I've never had wine, but do you think you could show me some of the finer wines France has? We'd have to agree to not talk about politics of course because we'd no doubt kill each other haha.
