CNN Lists Tax Rankings

I'll just go ahead and bring you my favorite part of this article:

"Five states have no personal income tax, and at least two of them, Florida and Nevada, are among the fastest-growing in the nation."

By the way, those 2 states, along with Tennessee, Texas and Hawaii rely completely upon Sales and excise taxes, which, if done right do not hurt the poor as the article states. Explain to me how a poor person is going to be hurt by a 6% sales tax on a $500 TV? They're not, since they're poor and can't afford it! If they're truly poor, they simply can not afford the things that are ebing taxed. In mos tof these states, food is not taxed and clothing has a minimal tax.

Under the Fairtax plan, new cars would be taxed, used cars would not. Everyone would recieve a monthly refund for the estimated amount that a family of their size would need for food and clothing for the month. My family and I (middle class family, making combined 80-100k among 4 incomes mind you) have run the numbers, and we would go from having no disposable income whatsoever to having a respectable amount of it! As it stands now, our disposable income happened once a year when we get our tax returns.

To be competitive in the future, we simply are going to have to restructure the way we collect taxes.

No would someone explain to me how John Kerry's plan of raising taxes and the minimum wage is going to 'fix' our economy (which is already growing)?

because people that make minimum wage spend all their money. if they made more that would inject more money into the economy at stores like wall mart. i know people that make $5.80 an hour. [although that person just got a new job making 8.50] alot of people make minimum wage. sure going from 5.50 to 6.25 or whatever the current wage is to a higher one wont mean much to you, it would help those people. now the argument against this is employers will raise prices and pass it on. but its still good to raise minimum wage.

taxing someone making over 200K a year will collect more tax dollars so we can spend in the war you support. you support so now support in with your pocket book. 200 Billion+ in a year or so isnt too bad is it?

THE Main reason nevada is growing so much is because people from california are moving there. a strong economy from gambling, and housing is VERY cheap there. a house that may cost 600K in califronia may go for 150K in nevada which is an afforable ammount. plus, no sale or state taxes and it just makes it a very attractive place for californians. plus you can GAMBLE!!!

Sir, the majority of people making minimum wage are under the age of 25! Many of the ones over the age of 25 are mentally disabled people who only have jobs as something to do instead of their parents sticking them in group homes.

I'm sorry if you have an 8th grade education and you can't get a job making at least $6 an hour, then God be with you. My 15 year old sister was able to go get her first job in fasst food making that much.

I already pay. In fact when I was 16 I had to pay out of pocket. Unlike many people who make more than I do, I never get back everything I put in, or for that matter, more. I've got a better plan, how about instead of taking everyone's money before they get it, just make them paya little more when they buy something. Poor people aren't buying things as it is, other than food and clothes anyhow. Many of them are on EBT and not doing that (BTW, ever seen the food people on EBT eat?)

Raising the minimum wage has zero to do with poor people. It had everything to dow ith unions.

The point about Nevada is correct. But I bet if you compare the states growing the quickest economically, to the states with the lowest taxes, the lists will look vaguely familiar.

The employers of lower income jobs (wal-mart, fast food, etc.) won't raise their prices due to higher wag eout put, they'll do it due to higher product costs, because union workers will be making more and that will cause a loss of manufacturing jobs and higher prices for business to business sales.

Come on man, many people who work low income jobs are retiree's or people with part-time second jobs who just do it for some spending cash. Raising the minimum wage will hurt poor people more than help them.

BTW, why do houses cost so much mor ein California?

"BTW, why do houses cost so much mor ein California?"

Well, if *I* had to take an educated guess, I would say for 2 reasons:

1) with all the earthquakes, mudslides and wild fires you'd probably have to pay more through housing to cover the cost of looming destruction.....then again, maybe *that* has nothing to do wiht it but I would think it would.

2) My second opinion is because just like any other place where you have beautiful scenery (mountains, ocean, wide open spaces or all the above)...it's going to cost you a pretty penny to live there so as it can remain beautiful.

Like I said though, that's just *my* best guess. Perhapes I'm wrong or just scratching the surface.

I'll disagree with you for 2 reasons: #1 San Diego is basically as expensive as anywhere else in Cali and it isn't earthquake prone and #2 San Diego is basically as expensive as anywhere else in Cali and it is basically in the desert

I know why it is, i just want to see his reason.

well, of course there are going to be exceptions to my "rule" as some cities and towns are not as nice as others in "Cali". I was basically talking about the state as a whole but never mind....

"I know why it is..."

Well then, mr. smarty pants..uh, *cough* I mean... skywalker, care to share it with the rest of the class?:-)

san diego is not in the desert. well part of the eastren and north eastren part is, but its a nice area. i used to stay down in la jolla/ northern san diego for a while. its a nice temperate climate down there and has a very relaxed feel to it. even when its gets hot it doesnt get over 90 because of the winds from the ocean. you have access to alot of beaches and tijuana is not far away. its a great place to live if you can afford it.

the main reason housing is SO expensive here is because people want to live here. basic supply and demand stuff. worry about earthquakes is the last thing on peoples mind. all modern homes have anchors that drill down so the house is bolted in sement and not just upright. in flordia, many homes are built with a 25 year warranty and the price actually goes down because theyre in the path of hurricanes.

california is a great place. people try to blame mexicans for all the problems but its people from ohio and georgia that come here and dont want to leave.

California sun has sunk
Behind the Anaheim Hills
here comes the night
I was high on junk
And the warm winds of Santa Anna feel all right

"...but its people from ohio and georgia that come here and dont want to leave."

hahaha.:-) Well, you don't have to worry about muddy and me taking up residence in Cali....I'd like to visit sometime but have no desire to live there - with all due respect. Of course...I have no desire to live in ohio for the rest of our lives either so....

I lived in California. I hated it. Beautiful place, but everything there was so god awful expensive! And yes, I could afford it. That's not mentioning that it NEVER rains! I like living where I get a nice mix of the weather.

No sir, the biggest problem in California has to do with regulations. You guys are regulated out the rear! That's the reason everything is expensive there.

Bottom line: Cali is a nice place to visit, but I do not ever want to live there again. I probably will have to for a year or so though.

Supply and demand btw...we had an issue witht hat here in Georgia, where people want to live too. Housing prices started shooting up quickly because people were trying to move here faster than houses could be built and other people could leave. What happened? Simple, more people started building homes. Someone saw a vacuum and they filled it. Housing prices still went up, but they always do, so that's expected, but they stopped skyrocketting.
