Starting Over

Lt Col. Oliver North USMC (ret)
In wine, the experts say, vintage is everything. If that's the case, 2004 has been a very bad year for the United Nations. But the U.N.'s vinegar may yet prove to be a very good thing for the rest of us -- particularly if it is decided to break open the casks, pour out the putrid contents and start over.

For adherents of "internationalism" and "collective security" at the U.N., 2004 has been a tough year. The "Oil-for-Food" scandal, a story that first broke on Fox News, now has "legs" of its own -- and investigators are honing in on those closest to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

To make matters worse for the egocentric Mr. Annan, George W. Bush, who challenged the U.N. to live up to its own stated resolutions and responsibilities -- and was castigated for doing so -- got himself re-elected.

nothing new in there.
Even the author asks for some kind of world government (he asks for a coalition of democraties against non democratic countries.
He reckons the USA have some trouble specifying what is terrorism (contras were terrorists or liberty fighters ?) and democracy ... (Nigeria is or not a democracy ? if yes why support a coup d'etat ?)

So far nothing else than the UNO exists and whatever has to be created will need some kind of negociating with other countries. Which has not been the approach of the white house recently.

But you know, Reagan started with the space war program and ended up with the ABM treaties ... so who knows... Bush may well indeed one day get in touch with jesus who'll tell him how wrong he's been so far...

May be democracy will make some progress in the middle east. Hopefully it may progress in the USA also.

I disagree. I have a great deal of repect for Lt. Col. North.

He is a true patriot.

hey me, Lt Col North never lied. He simply refused to tell congress what they wanted to know. Which by the way, he was right to do.

Ironically when actors in the 1950s did this, we later remembered them as patriots. A fact I agree with.

Congress over stepped its bounds (a fact that was later admitted to) and Lt Col North did the right thing.
