About a thousand Marines wake up in Afghanistan every day still. Things are quiet here except for the occasional IED and Taliban cell we come across in the mountains. We feed and clothe children and we distribute humanitarian aid supplies and medicine. We build schools and hospitals and we dig wells. We also set up a semi-puppet government we build in our own self-centered image. This government cannot yet stand on its own and so we stay, and we stay.
Most people here appreciate the money and effort the US puts in here to stabilize a free democracy who will fight the poppy growers (think heroin addicts) and the guys who think we're all evil and should die (the same guys who marginalize and ruin women and destroy the concept of human rights).
Most people like us.
More people wave to us here than would wave to a Marine convoy rolling down the highway back home.
Anyway...fare thee well, boys...Ricky and Nick - you will be missed.
