Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, unapologetic in the face of recent criticism that he has been too tough on his political opposition, said in San Francisco this week that Republicans "all behave the same, and they all look the same. ... It's pretty much a white Christian party."

"We're more welcoming to different folks, because that's the kind of people we are,'' Dean said Monday, responding to a question about diversity during a forum with minority leaders and journalists. "But that's not enough. We do have to deliver on things: jobs and housing and business opportunities and college opportunities.''
Dean's remarks are an example of why the former Vermont governor, who remains popular with the party's grass roots, has been a lightning rod for criticism since being elected to head the Democratic National Committee in February. His comments last week that Republicans "never made an honest living in their lives," which he later clarified to say Republican "leaders," were disavowed by such leading Democrats as Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
Posted by Mrs Muddy at June 9, 2005 11:46 PM | TrackBackwhats the problem with what he said? i thought you people hated "PC." so, what is wrong with his statements? is the republican party not a majority white men? is their agenda not primarily for that constituency? how many black republican members of congress are there?
uh yea, exactly. i think that comment dean made was 100% correct.
Ok, first and foremost, here's what I truely don't get:
1) Here's a guy who lost the presidental primaries because either:
a) People couldn't relate to him personally
b) People didn't agree with his politics
c) People didn't think he would be a good
leader for our country
OR
d) All of the above
...and so because of those above reasons, the democrat party thinks he would be a good leader (chairman) for the entire DNC?
2) Does Howard Dean - and every democrat who is totally agreeing with this guys statements -really think he's going to convince people like me (moderate swing voters) to join a party that has a chairman (and alot of its front runners) spewing nothing but anger, hatered and belittlement? Does he really think that moderates like me would actually be PROUD to even associate ourselves with the like of a party such as this?
And lets not forget the moderates who actually *do* claim to be more republican than democrat. Does Dean REALLY think that he's going to win these people over by making belittling comments about them?
3) Last but not least, let's take a look at what some people in his own party are saying about him:
Dean "doesn't speak for me with that kind of rhetoric and I don't think he speaks for the majority of Democrats," - Joe Biden ( Senator from Delaware)
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/06/05/politics/main699731.shtml
“The chairman of the DNC is not the spokesman for the party,” Edwards said. “He’s a voice. I don’t agree with it.” - John Edwards (former vice-presidential candidate)
http://cbs2chicago.com/politics/politicsnational_story_156082552.html
....But see! That's the thing. I thought the chairman of *any* party *did* speak for that party! At least the majority of the party anyway. Isn't the chairman *supposed* to represent the majority of the party's members and be the voice
that not only rallies their "troops" but is also supposed to be encouraging others outside that party to sign up and join right on in?
So.... Howard Dean is not the voice of the DNC? But yet, he's *supposed* to help see his party to the victory they so badly desire?
Actually, I wanted to post my comment before anyone else did. You beat me to the punch.:-P If you need any further explaination of how I feel then let me add an answer to your comment:
"i thought you people hated "PC." so, what is wrong with his statements?"
There's a difference in being "PC" and acting like an jackass (not to mention a jerk). If you have something to say...fine. Say it. BUT when you're in the position that Dean is in, you *should* go about it *respectfully* without belittling and name calling. No one cares if an ordinary joe like you or myself says the things he been saying BUT (as I said) someone in his position? He just makes his party look worse that what it already does. And the party's looking pretty pathetic as it stands now. IMO
Posted by: mrs. muddy at June 10, 2005 01:30 AMmost other democrats are wusses. they need someone like dean to tell the truth. all the other democrats are too busy being banana republicans than actually being the opposition party. theyre too busy cowering and tucking their tales to stand up and oppose the bush machine.
where was your outrage when the GOP was saying al-qadea wanted kerry elected? [unless you belived that rubbage.] where were you when the Vice president cursed the democratic senator? i just find your selective outrage amusing. out of all the things people have said, dean is a jerk and jackass for saying the GOP is mostly white male christians? Are white male christian offensive to you? LoL :D
what was it that was so offensive that dean stated? that the gop is full of white christian males, or that alot of them are theifs? [true on both counts]

Really? So who would fit your definition of this? BTW, just because there are democrats out there acting like - as you say - "banana republicans"- does that make them any less democrat just because they're not shooting off from their mouths?
"where was your outrage when the GOP was saying al-qadea wanted kerry elected?"
First off, I don't believe any of the top leaders said anything like that. It was from ordinary "joe's", I believe.
"where were you when the Vice president cursed the democratic senator?"
That was an isolated incident that occured because that senator apparently made a *personal* attack on the VP and the VP responded to that specific Senator - not the entire party nor to the people in support of the democrat party. Should Cheney have said somehting else? I'm sure he could have. But, like I said, I believe that was *one* isolated incident.
"i just find your selective outrage amusing."
I had no doubt you would. You usually find *most* of what we say amusing - jsut as we find what *you* say the majority of the time to be just as much the same. I'm just so glad we can take this time to amuse each other on such an "entertaining" level. So what *else* is new in your neck of the woods?
"out of all the things people have said, dean is a jerk and jackass for saying the GOP is mostly white male christians?"
Sometimes, It's not *what* people say, but *how* they say it. Dean said this in a fashion to where it comes off as a belittlement (which is ironic because *he* claims to be a Christian).
My whole point is that basically with Dean in the position to where it's his job is to rally and raise money for the DNC while making these comments....I think it just makes not only the GOP look better BUT it also makes the other parties - Independant, libertarian, etc. - sound much more appealing. Personally, I'm glad Dean is where he is. I hope he stays in place for quite a while.
