Who Can Be a hero?

Among my duties at work, I have one that involves me reading citations for medals. A few weeks ago, I found one that still sits in the back of my mind daily. It is short, not as detailed as more recent ones, but certain things stick out about it.

Navy Cross
Becker, Vernon P.
Trumpeter, U.S. Marine Corps
Date of Action: September 15, 1918

Citation:
The Navy Cross is awarded to Trumpeter Vernon P. Becker, United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism near Thiaucourt, France, on September 15, 1918. Trumpeter Becker displayed exceptional devotion to duty and coolness in action in carrying messages under trying barrages and machine-gun fire. He was wounded severely while doing his duty.
