While researching Christmas

I found this gem.

Dionysius Exiguus

Dionysius Exiguus, a monk from Russia who died about 544, was asked by Pope John I to set out the dates for Easter from the years 527 to 626. It seems that the Pope was keen to produce some order in the celebration of Easter. Dionysius decided to begin with what he considered to be the year of Jesus' birth. He chose the year in which Rome had been founded and determined, from the evidence known to him, that Jesus had been born 753 years later.

He was almost certainly acquainted with a suggestion by Hippolytus (170–236) that the date of Jesus' birth was December 25, but the trouble was that Hippolytus had not backed up this claim with sound arguments. Dionysius, however, had just the argument:

* His contemporaries claimed that God created the earth on March 25.
* It was inconceivable that the son of God could have been in any way imperfect.
* Therefore Jesus must have been conceived on March 25.
* This meant that he must have been born nine months later—December 25.

(Dionysius also concluded that, as a perfect being, Jesus could not have lived an incomplete life so he must have died on March 25 as well!)

Very interresting but GOOD GOD!!!! Is anyone else's head spinning!:-D It's so hysterical how much power those leaders thought they had back then (not to mention arogant). Of course, it's hysterical how much power todays leaders think they have presently.

Personally, I believe Jesus was born in the season of spring. Shortly after His birth the shepherds were told and the angels found them....

Luke 2:8 - "Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night."

Now, why would they be out in the field at night if it were winter?

Minor point, but humourous:
Socrates - don't you remember Bill and Ted calling him 'So Crates'?

:-)

"...don't you remember Bill and Ted calling him 'So Crates'?"

Funny you should mention that. I was thinking the same thing. From the first moment I saw Bill and Ted (which was probably within the first year or two that it came out) I've NEVER been able to look at the word Socrates since then without chuckling and hearing that "California surfer dude" accent.:-)

Speaking of Bill and Ted, I caught a bit of a documentary on "Billy the Kid" last week. When Muddy asked what I was watching I told him it was on "Mr. The Kid".:-P

I suppose it is just a coincidence that a monk named Dionysius decided that christmas should be celebrated at the end/begining of the calendar year, the traditional date of the pagan holiday known as the Bacchanalia- the feast of Dionysus!

There is much evidence that the executed criminal of ancient Roman legal record who was called Jesus of Nazareth was born in the springtime.

I actually touched on the Jesus's "actual" birthday above. Though I was not specific that I believe it was most likely from April to June (of *our* calandar) that He was born.

Muddy and I watched a program some years ago where they were talking all about that stuff. The positions of the stars of that time and using that to try to pinpoint a more acurate date. It was very facinating from an historical view point ....but not important in the end. As long as He was born and was crucified in order to save (or rescue) us from our sins....that's the important part.

BTW...that first link you gave (with all due respect) when it talked about how churches shouldn't have Christmas trees in their buildings and how parents should never teach their children to believe in santa? Well, everyone has a right to their own opinion but all those things have to do with your convictions. A tree is a material object that just happens to have alot of decorations on it....who cares. It's the intentions of the heart.

Also - and I don't have time to look it up now but - no, I don't believe it is a "coincidence" that Christmas is where it is today. I was always under the impression that the pagans did use that time for their celebration and the Christians came along decided they didn't like the pagan's celebration and decided to make it a more "positive" holiday.

I believe it was the Catholic churches way of trying to set the rules and trying to control everything at that time.

I will definately have to look that up again later (as it has been years since I've read it) but I think the story is something along those lines.

Yes Jesus was born in the spring. April 17th 9pm (the ninth hour) Constantine needed to distort his mission so it could not work and at the same time harness the power of faith to his armies, so the writings of 42 books were destroyed and or buried and the pillars of christianity were invented and indoctrinated into catholism.the pillars are false teachings designed to install blind faith false consolation and sabotage any salutary results. They are:The emaculate conseption ( The angel Gabrial blessed marys womb and Josephs seed with the blessing of the hands and they married before the Lord then they had sex like everyone else does until she was pregnant with a child of God by the spirit and of the flesh,)the story of the serpant and the apple ( simply a metafore for filelity- Adam and eave were the first two amongst millions who were given the knowlage of wright and wrong making them the first man and woman instead of humans after millions of years of evolution God entered the divine knowlage through Jehova to Adam and eave. There was no apple no snake no tree no fig leaf Just knowlage of wright and wrong and a concience -they messed up and she commited adultry phyicly and spiritualy starting the battle of good and evil here on earth.),Jesus died for our sins (Jesus did not die for our sins he died because the heiarcy did not want him to teach the remidy to humanity because they would have lost thier power-he did not cause us to be forgiven-he forgave us and set an example for us to folow for forgiveness is the key to healing our souls and a nessesary prerequisite to accomplishing heaven on earth),Going to heavan when you die ( Heaven on earth as in heaven -as in the lords prayers -when we -humanity accomplish his will we will be in heaven hear on earth alive and well not dead),The blessing of authority not the blessing of his hands (Jesus healed with his hands that was an example of how to pass Gods blessings and how to heal eachother but the church kept it for themselves -note that priests ordain each other in vain using the hands on the head as it should be for all-in vain because thier vanity and greed lost all salutation),The bible is true and complete (the bible is severly damaged by dogme of two thousand years of ad libbers with hiearcal athority against Christ),God watches over everyone (we are subject to the harm put apon humanity by all humanity through our spiritual conection),confess and be forgiven (we are forgiven as we forgive others -as in the lords prayer
