Oh My, How Dare They Build a Big House?!

I've been seeing a lot of articles lately about "McMansions." At first it sounds horrible, they build these huge houses on these tiny lots in the middle of the city. Oh God the humanity.

How dare these people tear down perfectly hideous and tiny houses design to live 2 parents and a child in he post WW2-era, with their own money, in the middle of the city, where they can use mass transit much more easily, and not clog the freeways with their gas guzzling vehicles on their way to work. How dare these people build houses sometimes located in such a way that they can walk or bike to work!

In all seriousness, yeah in some cases people go a bit overboard and excercise poor taste. But hey, news flash, it is their property and their money. If they want a gi-normous house, go for it! Especially given that they usually tear down a virtually unlivable house and functionally obsolete house that few people want to live in.

We complain about urban sprawl, oh God these people won't live in the city and it is causiing smog and they clog the freeways and blah blah blah. Now people are trying to move back to the city, and when they do that people complain because they build bigger houses.

What I really don't understand is why politicians oppose this since i t means increased property values and thus, property taxes.

It's more class envy.

I couldn't afford one of these houses. Nor could my parents. So what?

Not to mention, that I've seen some of these so called "McMansions" and frankly, as we say here in the south "they ain't that big!"
