Computer Recycling

So I have some electronic waste lying around the house I want to recycle. Most of it no longer works and I like sustainability as much as anyone else.

I am amazed at the number of places that charge fees to recycle! Why would people want to recycle for a fee, when they can just junk it for free?! We will never be more green as long as it is cheaper to not be green.

Well, it's just like that old song sung by everyone's favorite frog puppet - Kermit. "It's not easy being green.".

Sorry, With that door of opportunity you swung wide open....I just couldn't resist.:-)

i agree it is pretty dumb, i never knew that untill i recycled my computer and t.v at Electronic Recyclers and they charged. i was sort of mad but whatever its better for the enviorment. i guess its cause it costs alot to recycle it so they need to charge? thats what the guy was telling me...

In the case of computers and certain other electronics, you aren't actually paying a recycling fee, you are paying a disposal fee. They contain metals harmful to the environment, and thus most states charge something similar to a hazardous waste disposal fee.

Why do people pay the fee instead of just trashing it? Because in most states, it is against the law to put a computer, monitor, TV, etc in the trash due to the above reason.

So it's easier just to call the salvation army, they'll pick it up....and give you a tax deductible donation slip :)
